  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 2 cups caramelized onions (approximately 2 large onions)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian seasoned)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4 oz sliced Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Additional caramelized onions for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Sauté thinly sliced onions in butter over medium heat until golden brown (15-20 minutes).
  3. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, sautéed onions (reserve some for topping), breadcrumbs, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  4. Shape the mixture into a loaf and place it in the prepared pan.
  5. Bake for about an hour or until the internal temperature reaches at least 160°F (70°C). Add cheese slices during the last ten minutes of baking.
  6. Let rest for five minutes before serving with remaining caramelized onions on top.
